Lightning strike causes fire and train delays

A lightning strike has caused an electric tranformer to ignite into flames in Penkridge

Fire crews were called to the scene on Water Eaton Lane at 8.17pm this evening and once crew from Penkridge is in attendance using one hose reel jet is being used to put out the flames.

Western Power has been forced to isolate the power supply.

It is thought the ingoing incident is the source of train delays in the area.

Network Rail have confirmed delays of around an hour between Wolverhampton and Stafford.

Services affected include the CrossCountry between Bristol Temple Meads and Manchester Piccadilly, London Midland between Birmingham New Street and Liverpool Lime Street / Crewe and the Virgin Trains service between London Euston and Crewe.

A National Rail statement said: "Emergency services are dealing with an incident between Penkridge and Stafford and this is causing delays of up to 60 minutes to trains between Wolverhampton and Stafford. Disruption is expected to continue until the end of service."
