Charanjit Andev, of Smethwick, had been drinking at the home of Selina Bentley when the row broke out on March 29.

Wolverhampton Crown Court was told Andev had decided to leave the house and was followed to the door by his victim.

The argument had become more heated and Andev grabbed his former partner by the throat and threw her on to the bonnet of a car - twice banging her head against it.

The court heard he also had a bottle with him but had not used it.

He stopped the attack after his victim's son intervened.

Andev, 46, of St Paul's Road, Smethwick, pleaded guilty to a charge of grievous bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

He was due to be sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court, but the case was adjourned until August 28 for a pre-sentence report to be re-considered by the Probation Service.

Mr Howard Searle, prosecuting, said the victim had suffered a two-to-three inch cut behind her left ear, which needed stitches, along with bruising and swelling to her head and scratches to the neck.

"The victim was in a relationship with the defendant for five years but it was not a particularly strong one and they did not live together," he said.

"Andev has had problems with alcohol and on the night in question he had been drinking as had the victim and others.

"The defendant had decided to leave and was walking to the door when the argument started. It became abusive and he put his hands around her throat, threw her on to the bonnet of the car and banged her head twice."

The court was told the relationship had now ended.

Miss Chiara Maddocks, defending, said she was 'disappointed' with the findings of a pre-sentence report and argued it did not give her client the chance to address his drinking problem. She also said Andev needed medical treatment to his eyes which also needed to be considered by the report.

Judge Amjad Nawaz agreed to delay sentencing until later in the month so the report could be re-assessed.
