Amrik Sandhu was targeted by Dean Mason after threatening to call police when the pair returned to hurl racial abuse outside the Queen's Head in Church Street in Bloxwich.

Mason leapt over a fence and plunged the pliers into back of Mr Sandhu, who then fled inside the pub and later needed three stitches, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Mason, aged 25, of Severn Road, Blakenall, Walsall pleaded guilty to wounding.

Prosecuting, Mr Robert Edwards, said the trouble started when the women were ejected from the pub.

Mr Sandhu was standing outside the premises when they returned to hurl racial abuse at him.

As he pulled out his mobile phone to ring the police it was grabbed from his hand by one of the women and Mason leapt over a fence to confront him, said Mr Edwards.

Mr Edwards said: "Mr Sandhu saw the defendant running towards him while taking a black object out of a pocket and shouting: 'If you want to have a go.'

"The defendant then swung his right arm around the back of the injured party who felt a lot of pain, discovered he was bleeding and made his way back into the licensed house."

The attacker fled with the women leaving the victim to be taken to hospital.

The incident happened around 8.20pm on April 21.

Mr Sandhu said in a victim impact statement that he was still helping to run the pub but was now 'always on edge'.

He also said he was now on guard when people he did not recognise came in to the premises.

Mr David Swinnerton, defending, said: "This was out of character.

"There are reasons for this.

"They are troubling and have a mental health background."

Judge John Warner called for a psychiatric report before a final decision was reached on the appropriate punishment.

But he warned: "This man is seriously at risk of an immediate custodial sentence."

The defendant was remanded on bail until September 30 so that the required report can be prepared.

Judge Warner said to him: "The fact that I am allowing your bail to continue will not in any way tie the hands of the sentencing judge as to how your are dealt with.

All sentencing options will be open to him or her."
