Officers were called to Birchfield Road at the junction of The Broadway just after 9.15pm where a 24-year-old Winson Green man was found with multiple stab wounds.

As officers flooded the area, they found "several" passers-by tending to the seriously injured man.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Joyce, from Force CID, said: "When officers arrived at the scene, they found several people tending to the man who had been left for dead by his attacker.

"These local heroes were comforting the man and stemming the flow of blood from his multiple wounds. Without their selfless actions, I'm quite certain he would have died."

The motive for the attack remains unclear at this time but work continues this morning to find the person or people behind the crime.

"As part of our on-going investigation we have spoken to local people and have identified CCTV cameras which may have captured the attack," added Det Insp Joyce.

"Our forensic specialists have also been to examine The Broadway but what I really need is anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack to get in touch.

"As well as people who may have witnessed the incident, I'd be particularly keen to hear from people who cared for the man but left the area before they spoke to officers."

The man remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital this morning given details.
