A red BMW motorcycle and a white and blue Suzuki motorcycle were both involved in the smash at 10am today. Both riders were pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman who witnessed the crash in a nearby van was also treated for shock.

Staffordshire Police said specially trained officers were supporting the families of the two men, who have yet to be formally identified.

Around seven miles of the A5 was closed between Weston-under-Lizard and Gailey, while a detailed examination of the scene took place. This included the police helicopter taking aerial photographs of the scene.

The A41 was also closed to stop vehicles joining the A5, leading to long delays for motorists and HGV drivers were advised to avoid the area completely as their vehicles are unsuitable for nearby country lanes.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith, said: "Crews arrived to find two motorbikes that had been in collision.

"Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save either of the two motorcyclists, both men, and they were confirmed dead at the scene.

"A third patient, a woman who was in a van nearby and witnessed the incident, was treated for symptoms of shock, before being discharged at the scene."

The ambulance service sent an ambulance, a paramedic area support officer and a community first responder to the scene.

Anyone with information should contact Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident 189 of July 29.
