The thief is believed to have visited Cash Converters, in Kings Square, West Bromwich and asked for an insurance cheque to be cashed.

When a member of staff at the store contacted the insurance company, the phone had been diverted and an accomplice answered the call.

Thinking the cheque was genuine, the store handed over the cash only to find out later that the cheque was invalid.

The incident happened on Saturday, March 28.

PC Naseem Ahmed, from Sandwell's Investigation Team, said: "This may not be the first time this man has used this scam and we are interested in finding out any information that could help our investigation.

"We are sure that someone will recognise him and are appealing to anyone who can supply an identity to call me or one of the team."

Anyone with information is urged to call West Midlands Police on 101. Alternatively people can leave information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers the independent charity on 0800 555 111.
