Two male officers, both based at West Bromwich station, were responding to reports of an assault on Saturday night when their marked police car was in a collision with another vehicle.

It happened about 10.50pm in Coles Lane, at the junction with Hill Top.

Emergency services at the scene of the crash

A West Midlands Fire Service spokeswoman said a crew from Dudley station attended and carried out a 'full roof removal' of the police car, which had been in a collision with another car and then collided with traffic signals.

The officer in the passenger seat was removed from the Vauxhall Insignia on a long board and taken to hospital.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said the officer was later discharged, and the second officer involved suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, a BMW, was not injured.

A man was arrested at the scene but was later released, with no further action.

The circumstances of the collision are being investigated and any witnesses should call police on 101.
