A green-figured duo have continued their remarkable run of success after winning yet another gold medal for their stunning cacti.

Business partners Stan Griffin and Vicki Newman only set up their West Bromwich firm Craig House Cacti in 2007 but have since enjoyed near constant success.

In May they won their seventh consecutive RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal and this week they won gold at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show.

Mr Griffin, aged 67, estimated Craig House Cacti has now won around 80 consecutive gold medals since its unbeaten run started in July 2009.

And naturally it is the Chelsea medals he said that have been most satisfying.

He said: "The Chelsea flower show is the crème de la crème of flower shows.

"There is no finer show in the world so you have got to think getting the gold medal seven years in a row is quite the achievement.

"It is an ongoing process where we just try and up the standard with the plants for the display all year round.

"You need that to achieve the gold medal. You have to look after the plants and make sure you have improved from 12 months previously and look to add new plants where possible as you go along.

"It is just a matter of paying attention to them and to all the little details, making sure you get everything right."

When appearing at Chelsea the prickly plants tend to attract a lot of attention from celebrities. This year big names who stopped for a photograph included Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole and his wife Zoe.

Mr Griffin added: "The celebrities take an interest. I suppose it is partly a publicity thing for them to have the photos but we like them to come by. It is nice to be appreciated that way."

The duo has also been celebrating the heatwave which had hit the nation this week.

"To be honest our plants absolutely love the heat like this," explained Mr Griffin. "The flowers pop open like nobody's business while everyone else is watering like mad to keep their plants in condition.

"It is great that we don't have to worry over the plants. It is just bad news for me and Vicki having to stand it."
