Firefighters from West Midlands Fire Service tweeted about the dramatic rescue and their skills were broadcast live – a first for the service.

The three-year-old male dog became an internet hit after emergency crews streamed the rescue live on the internet. The drama unfolded after the poor pup fell 15ft down a shaft brick house on Sunday evening.

Crews were called shortly after 7.30pm and it took just over two hours to rescue the animal using specialist line equipment.

Offices from the service's technical rescue unit successfully released the Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog around 9.30pm and returned the pet safely to its owners.

The service tweeted: "That's a first. We just streamed the rescue of a dog trapped down a drain live over the internet. Dog now safe and well." The rescue was broadcast using live video streaming app Periscope by Neil Griffiths, commander for Sandwell and Dudley.

Police officers from Old Hill and Cradley Heath Neighbourhood Policing team also attended to help with the rescue efforts.

A total of 10 firefighters attended the scene on Powke Lane, Rowley Regis.

The Green Watch crew from Oldbury Community Fire Station responded to the emergency call from the panicked owner.

Crews later requested assistance from the specialist tech rescue team, after assessing the access restrictions of the area.

It is believed the dog had fallen down the shaft after getting through nearby railings.

The shaft did have a couple of inches of water in the bottom, but the dog was rescued safely.
