A tumble dryer, an electronic game and a television were wrecked when the lead overheated and burst into flames at the premises, in Eyland Grove.

Crews arrived at the first floor flat off Lower Rushall Street at about 3pm this afternoon to find the appliances ablaze, while the male occupier aged in his 20s was out.

Acting Watch Commander Ian Hill, of Walsall fire station, said: "The cause of the fire was an electrical fault caused by an overloaded extension in the bedroom. The occupant had popped out and when he came back we were dealing with the incident. The block's smoke alarm went off and this alerted other people living there to the fire. They could see smoke seeping out and rang 999.

"When the man came home was very shocked to find there, but was more concerned about his turtle which was in another room than anything else. The turtle was fine.

"The bedroom door had been left shut which resulted in the smoke being confined to one room."
