The girl was injured as she was walking on St Pauls Road, Warley, at around 3.30pm yesterday.

Police have released these CCTV images of a woman they are treating as a significant witness.

The woman is believed to be either Asian or black, and appears to be driving an old shape grey Honda CRV, and although she did stop at the scene she left before police could talk to her.

Sergeant Steve Newbury from the Collision Investigation Unit said: "We suspect whoever collided with the girl may not have been aware they had clipped her and as such, we're not treating this as a typical hit-and-run.

"We believe the woman in the image has vital information about the vehicle involved and the circumstances.

"I would like to stress she is not being sought as a suspect and I would urge her to contact us directly so we can establish exactly what happened."

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
