Around 20 caravans containing travelling families settled down on the park and ride site on Shaw Road, near to Wolverhampton Science Park, at around 4.30pm.

As the travellers gathered around the locked car park, which is council property and often used as match day parking for Wolves games, some had blocked traffic from passing through the nearby Showell Road.

Council spokesman Tim Clark said:"We were alerted to reports that around 20 caravans had begun to assemble on roads around the park and ride car park off Bushbury Lane.

"Council officers immediately attended the scene and observed some of the vehicles blocking the surrounding roads.

"The police were also in attendance and they requested we allowed the vehicles onto the car park as a temporary measure to ensure roads were not blocked as we approached the rush hour.

"We agreed to the police request to alleviate potential serious traffic issues.

"The travellers have indicated that they do not intend to remain in this location for long.

"The police will be supervising them closely and will ask them to move on as soon as possible.

"The council has provided rubbish sacks and have urged the travellers to leave the site as they found it."

Last year around 15 caravans used by travellers were parked on the same car park for four days.

John Bartelo, who runs Barts Motor Bodies on the nearby Showell Road industrial estate, said he was concerned the travellers had returned to the site.
