Driver crashes after suffering cardiac arrest at wheel in Wombourne

A driver has suffered a cardiac arrest and crashed his car into a tree in Wombourne.

Passers-by helped the man in his 60s after the crash just before 9am this morning.

An ambulance, a community paramedic, a paramedic area support officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a MERIT trauma doctor on board attended the scene in Millfields Way, Wombourne.

Claire Brown, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman, said: "When crews arrived they found a car which had collided with a tree. Passers-by were helping the driver, a man in his 60s, who had gone into cardiac arrest. Ambulance staff immediately commenced advanced life support at the scene.

"The man was given CPR and was shocked four times using a defibrillator by medics. Thankfully, the man successfully regained a pulse and started to breathe once more but was still in a serious condition. Ambulance staff conveyed him to Russells Hall Hospital by land ambulance on blue lights for further emergency treatment."
