Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to The Mill at Alveley, near Bridgnorth at 5am this morning, after receiving several calls from members of the public.

The service had 11 fire engines at the scene and crews from Hereford and Worcester and West Midlands were also in attendance.

The hotel closed in September last year.

Reporter William Tomaney has been tweeting live from the scene:

Scott Hurford, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service's incident commander at the scene, said: "We have been down here since 5.30am. We have got more than 80 firefighters here and from four different brigades - Shropshire, West Midlands, Staffordshire and Hereford & Worcester.

"The building is an old hotel when we came here it was totally consumed in fire. At the moment we are firefighting trying to extinguish the fire.

"In regards to the cause there is an on going investigation where we are working with the police to determine whether this fire was started accidentally or deliberately.

"We have had a partial collapse of the building. In regard to the future it will be down to what the building assessors say but it is fair to say part of it will certainly have to be demolished before it is rebuilt.

People have taken to Twitter to share their memories of the venue:

"We would like to advise people small roads coming through here are closed and will be closed all day - that doesn't include the main road to Kidderminster, the A442.

"We are going to be on here all day today at least.

"There have been no injuries and at the time of the fire no one was believed to have been on site.

"No houses have been evacuated. The call came in from a local resident."

Andy Johnson, area manager for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, added: "The service is currently dealing with a large fire involving a disused hotel in the Birdsgreen area of Alveley, South Shropshire.

"The building is approximately 90x50m in size and consists of three floors, with the whole of the building involved in the fire.

"The service has received a number of calls from the area, due to smoke being visible from a number of miles away."

Fire crews remain at the scene of the blaze.
