The man, aged in his 30s, was transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for treatment.

Both gas and electricity providers were notified and there was some impact on local services.

Watch Commander Paul Clarke said petrol had been applied to a naked flame to enhance the flames causing vapours to catch fire and burn the man.

He added: "The message we want to get out there is this is the time of year when people are having barbecues.

"We say as a fire service enjoy the barbecue, enjoy the summer, but not to light a fire with petrol or any other accelerant.

"It is a nasty combination which can cause really bad injuries."

The fire had been extinguished before firefighters arrived. Nobody else is believed to have been injured.
