Furious Labour MP David Winnick launched a stinging attack on his Tory opponent as he held onto his Walsall North seat.

Mr Winnick, who secured a majority of 1,937, said Douglas Hansen-Luke should be 'thoroughly ashamed' of his actions on social media and throughout the campaign.

During the campaign, Mr Hansen-Luke has taken potshots at Mr Winnick on Twitter, including superimposing the MP's head onto the body of cartoon character Where's Wally. He titled the tweet 'Where's Winnick?', implying the MP was rarely in the constituency.

After the results came in, Mr Winnick took to the stage and laid into Mr Hansen-Luke.

"I believe in hard fighting to get into Parliament," said Mr Winnick, who will be 86 at the time of the next election.

"I have only once previously complained about the conduct of the Conservative candidate, and that was in 1987, on all other occasions they fought a fair fight. But I deplore – deplore! – the way the Conservative candidate has conducted his campaign. I don't like saying it but it should be said. He should be thoroughly ashamed of what he has put on social media and I say to him, by such conduct, one wonders whether he should be in the House of Commons at all."

Mr Hansen-Luke said: "You often hear of a sour loser but it's unusual to hear of a sour winner. In some ways it's flattering that someone like me, just starting out in politics, can rattle a 35-year-old veteran. Really he's missed the point. Walsall's got great potential and he should have recognised that in his speech rather than blaming others."
