The former Ground Force star confessed: "I don't really miss it. I had a fantastic time and did some amazing things that I would never have done as a straight forward gardener. It was informative as well as entertaining and gave a lot of people some straight forward advice.

"For seven years of my life it was bonkers working seven days a week and hardly ever being at home. I still work four days a week, do lectures on cruise ships and help at dementia and care homes where gardening can act as a great stimulus."

The 48-year-old, who lives in the New Forest, continued: "Now I am enjoying a much quieter life and like having a bit of time to myself to potter about my garden."

Charlie was talking as she prepared for a question and answer session and demonstration to a 200-strong audience at the Hollybush Garden Centre in Warstone Road, Shareshill.

She said: "It is very nice that people still recognise me and say nice things about me – except when they reveal their grandad likes me! You will never separate the English from their gardens."
