Sumon Miah, admitted three counts each of perverting the course of justice and speeding offences at Birmingham Crown Court.

The 31-year-old first struck in June 2012 when he denied being the driver of his grey BMW that was clocked going eight miles per hour over the 30mph limit on New John Street West.

A month later the prosecution forms were returned to police forms claiming that a Mr Ahmed, of Parliament Street, had been the driver. New forms were sent to Mr Ahmed's address but the prosecution drew a blank when no further trace of the supposed driver was found.

It was a similar story in September 2013, when Miah, of Long Road, West Bromwich, again was caught on a mobile speed camera on the Black Country New Road in Wednesbury doing 52mph in a 40mph zone.

Then, a year later, in September 2014 Miah was clocked for a third time driving at speed, at the exact same place as his previous offence, on the Black Country New Road.

None of the three prosecutions could be progressed when incorrect or insufficient information was received about the supposed 'real' drivers.

But, the cases were reopened by an investigation team based within the force's Central Ticket Office who became suspicious when the third prosecution form was returned in the post as 'address unknown'.

Further enquiries found that the address, in Small Heath, was linked to several other false speeding ticket claims.

Miah was brought in for police questioning and he admitted that he had paid a man he knew as 'Mo' to deal with the tickets and assumed it had all been sorted out.

PC Jason Dooley, from the Central Ticket Office, said: "He admitted that he had been foolish and had paid this man several hundred pounds to get rid of the speeding tickets so he could keep a clean licence.

"His plan backfired, however, as despite the months that have passed we have continued to follow this case and eventually brought the true speeding driver to justice.

"He has been jailed and has lost his licence for 12 months as a result of his lies."
