A meat frenzy saw hundreds of people queue around the block to sniff out bargains at a Wolverhampton shop.

Hungry customers descended on Town and Country Meats in Oxley, turning up two and a half hours before it opened.

The shop held a cut-price sale for a Bank Holiday Monday special.

It came after bosses announced on Facebook that they would be selling the vast majority of their meat stock in a pay half, get half free offer.

The offer lasted from 10am until the store had ran out of meat, with offers including four beef joints for £10 and packs of grilling steaks for £5.

And people queued from 7.30am on Marsh Lane Parade to get their hands on a bargain.

Every staff member was called in to help cope with demand – with even people who don't work there anymore offering their meat-serving services for free. Store manager Mike Ottley said the firm didn't actually make a huge amount on promotion days like this, but wanted to draw new customers in.

He said: "People were queueing from 7.30am and by 9am the queue had gone all the way to the bottom of the parade – it was three or four deep.

"We've called in all the staff today and even a few volunteers who don't work here anymore who've helped out.

"Everyone's worked really hard to make it a huge success. "It'll take an hour or two to re-stack the shelves. We see this day as an opportunity to pay back some of our loyal customers who help keep the business going throughout the year.

"We chose the Bank Holiday as it works out well for us and our customers, with people off work looking to enjoy some food with their families.

"The day was a huge success and to see the queues coming out of the shop and down the road was fantastic.

"Some people have never been here before but they'll be coming back."
