More than 450 business owners in the West Midlands have backed the Conservatives' long-term economic plan.

Henry Carver, who runs Wolverhampton-based Carvers Building Supplies, is among those to pledge his support to the party's plans in a letter published today.

David Cameron's party received the boost from bosses including Karren Brady, the high profile former Birmingham City managing director, who is the Tory's small business ambassador. It comes weeks after the Labour Party, led by Ed Miliband, faced a backlash from some of Britain's biggest business leaders featured in a political advert about the risks of Britain leaving the EU.

The Tories today claimed around 5,000 small and medium-sized business owners across the country back their plans for the economy.

And the party said bosses warned a change now would be far too risky and would undo the 'good work' of the coalition government.

The news marked the start of the last full week of campaigning ahead of the General Election as the Tories try to seize ground ahead of May 7.

The polls remain almost neck and neck between the two political heavyweights but Brady, who stars on television show The Apprentice, claimed the Tories were the only party to stand up for business.

She said: "In the past five years the Conservatives have done a huge amount to help small businesses. Red tape was suffocating them – Conservatives have cut it to the tune of £10 billion a year.

"But the frightening truth is that all of this is at risk on May 7. We are looking down the barrel of a truly terrible outcome for our country. Ed Miliband in Government, propped up by the SNP, undoing all the hard work of the past five years.

"Let's stick to the plan that has got us this far – vote Conservative."
