Cannock road labelled worst in the county

A pothole-pitted road which cuts through a Cannock housing estate has been labelled 'the worst in the county'.

The state of John Street, Wimblebury has been rapidly deteriorating for two years.

Residents are furious that their requests for action have been put on hold while 'perfectly good' footpaths in the area are being resurfaced, they say.

Resident David Beardsmore said: "The road is an absolute disgrace.

"It's full of potholes.

"I've reported them but nothing has been done about it.

"My main concern is that it's dangerous. I live off this road and use it a lot, and it's been getting worse for two or three years.

"It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't renewing all the footpaths in the area which have no need of replacement.

"It defies all logic."

The 68-year-old, of Adelaide Drive which leads off John Street, said he had complained to the county council and was told that the potholes would be filled in 'late summer'.

Mr Beardsmore continued: "I was totally gobsmacked.

"I couldn't believe they were prepared to leave it that long."

County and district councillor Diane Todd has herself complained to the highways department over the state of the road and says she has been given assurance that John Street will be prioritised.

She said: "The road is that bad it needs completely resurfacing.

"Driving down there is like going through a maze because of the way you have to keep dodging the potholes.

"You're sometimes having to drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid a hole.

"It is the worst road in the county and I've been saying so for a long time but I was told we wouldn't get funding until this year."

She said Staffordshire County Council's highways department had now promised to fill in the potholes imminently and resurface the road in August.

Repairs have been made to more than 2,000 potholes on roads in the Cannock area in the past 12 months.
