Inderjit Khangura reached speeds of more than 70mph as he sped away from West Bromwich High Street where he had been stopped for questioning about documentation for the car, said Mr Howard Searle, prosecuting.

The 24-year-old drove on the wrong side of the road and put the lives of other road users at so much risk that police were forced to call off the pursuit on September 4, the court was told.

Khangura had assumed the identity of his uncle who was the registered owner of the BMW and given the name and date of birth of that person as his own when first pulled over by the police, it was said.

Officers realised that these details were false because he did not look old enough to have been born in 1960 but as they tried to quiz him further the defendant reversed into their vehicle and accelerating away, continued Mr Searle.

Mr Harpreet Sandhu, defending, said Khangura had behaved like a 'feckless' youth but had grown up as a result of the incident.

The defendant from Birchwood Road, Penn admitted dangerous driving and was given an eight month prison sentence suspended for two years with 250 hours unpaid work and a six month night time curfew.

Khangura was also banned from driving for three years and told to pay £1,200 costs.

Recorder Stephen Linehan QC told him: "You lied to the police officers and rammed their vehicle to get away before driving through the streets of West Bromwich in a manner so dangerous it was likely to result in the death or maiming of other people.

"But I have come to the conclusion you were showing off so I am just able to avoid sending you away immediately because you are working and have employees."
