The 21-year-old had been enjoying a night out in Birmingham with his girlfriend and another young woman, when he exchanged words with another man and others in his group on the dancefloor.

The offender then punched him once to the jaw, causing him to fall to the floor and bang his head.

He was knocked unconscious and, on arrival at hospital, was found to have a bleed on the brain, a fractured skull and a broken jaw.

The attacker is described as a white man, with brown hair and stubble or a slight beard. He wore a dark coloured zip up top and was in the company of a blond haired woman.

The incident occurred in Levana Bar, the Arcadian, on Friday, March 27.

The young man, from Boldmere, had been on the dancefloor in the early hours of Friday 27 March when he exchanged words with another man and others in his group.

Detective Sergeant Gregory Evans, from the violent crime team of Force CID in Birmingham, is leading the inquiry. She said: "We urge anyone who recognises the couple captured on CCTV to call us as soon as possible.

"The young man's injuries were quite serious and he needed significant hospital treatment for them, from which he continues to recover.

"It could be that the offender didn't realise the extent of the injuries caused and we urge him to come forward to police to assist our enquiries."

Anyone with information should call the violent crime team of Force CID at Smethwick police station by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
