Pc Adam Rushton told Birmingham Crown Court that it had been 'unprofessional' to go and see a woman he had earlier helped in a hotel but he had been off duty and was bringing her nappies, with no intention of having sex with her.

The court earlier heard how he had assisted in temporarily rehousing the young mother there whilst on uniformed duty with another colleague, but returned in his casual clothes that evening and went straight up to her room.

He was noticed by the manager who contacted the police and Acting Sergeant Roger Poole was called over the concerns he was meeting the victim of domestic violence.

Under cross-examination about the visit, Mr Duncan Bould, prosecuting, said Sgt Poole tried to make it clear he should leave.

But 37-year-old Rushton said: "He advised me but I had no order. It was quite a light-hearted chat the way he was talking to me.

"Looking back, it was unprofessional but I did go round."

Mr Bould said he later lied to inspectors, but Rushton said: "The reason I went was because of the nappies.

"The thing I lied about was having sex with her."

He denied sleeping with another woman with whom he exchanged 'flirty' text messages, after her initial call about a neighbour dispute.

Mr Bould said he had also sent her indecent photos of himself, but Rushton replied: "I can't remember ever sending a photo but we did send flirty text messages."

He said the pair met through him being a police officer but they realised they had the same group of friends.

Rushton said he had no idea why the woman would allege they had sex while he was on duty but claimed that she had changed her story and lied.

He said he met another young woman when he took her details because she was a potential witness to a crime.

Rushton said they later had a relationship but it was while he was off duty and denied ever having sex in a police car.

Mr Bould said another woman had recalled that they had sex while he was wearing his uniform and had his police radio on him.

Rushton admitted having sex with her but said: "I've never done that with her whilst on duty.

"I may have been in half uniform but I can't remember if I had a radio or not. I was not on duty."

He said 'half uniform' meant he may have been wearing police boots, combat trousers and a police t-shirt.

The serving officer, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, is accused of 10 counts of misconduct in a public office and two counts of obtaining personal data.

He denies the charges.

The incidents are alleged to have taken place between 2006 and 2012.

He was arrested in April 2014 and questioned about the matters.

The trial continues.
