Delays as escaped horses close the M6 in Birmingham

Three escaped horses and a foal forced the M6 in Birmingham to close in both directions tonight, causing lengthy tailbacks.

The animals escaped on to the carriageway between junctions 4A and 5 at around 7.45pm.

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) eventually corralled the animals.

Traffic built up in both directions as a result of the incident, with queues of up to two miles heading towards the city.

The animals were safely relocated to a nearby field and the road reopened shortly after 9.15pm.

A van, a police vehicle and an articulated lorry were used as a cordon to snare the horses.

The section of motorway is already a traffic hot-spot due to the five-month closure of the junction 5 entry road for maintenance works.
