Man dies in car crash on M54

A man died in a car crash on the M54 near Wolverhampton today.

The motorist, who is in his 40s and from the Birmingham area, died at the scene of the crash this morning between Junction 2 and 3 of the motorway.

Police closed a stretch of the M54 while the incident was dealt with and diversions put in place.

A spokesman for Staffordshire police said: "Just before 8.20am, a car left the carriageway westbound between Junctions 2 and 3 of the M54, close to Essington and Featherstone. The driver, a man in his 40s from Birmingham, sadly died at the scene."

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue say there was only one vehicle involved and that it had driven into the verge for an unknown reason.

An ambulance together with a paramedic support officer, paramedic in a rapid response car; and the Midlands Air Ambulance went to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews attended to a single vehicle incident on the M54 near Coven.

"Sadly, it quickly became apparent to crews that nothing could be done to save the person involved. He was confirmed dead at the scene."

The road was closed until 12.30pm.
