From 6am-11pm Monday to Saturday, the initial fare will remain at £2.80, with every mile thereafter costing £1.60.

Hackney carriage drivers and council bosses in the city came to the decision at a meeting yesterday.

Both parties agreed that in the current economic climate it would not be appropriate to increase fares.

Councillor Paul Singh said: "I think the decision to freeze taxi fares in Hackney carriages is a very kind thing for drivers in the city to do.

"It is clear that they understand the economic climate and are sympathetic to the financial restraints of people in Wolverhampton at this time."
