Tory MP Aidan Burley made a swipe at the media and praised his wife for dealing with 'rude' constituents as he gave his final speech in the House of Commons.

The Cannock Chase MP, who was once a rising star in David Cameron's Conservatives, said media 'intrusion' was no longer a price worth paying as he made his farewell.

Mr Burley is standing down from the Commons after a single term. He came in for heavy criticism after it was revealed he attended a stag party in the French Alps in 2011 where the groom wore a Nazi uniform.

"I want to thank my wife Jodie who has worked for over four years as the manager of my constituency office, the MP Help Zone, dealing with some of the most complex cases and often the rudest and most awkward constituents, she has maintained a quiet dignity and poise that few could match," he said.

"Our wonderful wedding last year was the highlight of my time here.

"Being an MP does come at a great cost, including being away from home four nights a week, working very long hours, often for lower pay than you were working before and with unwanted and often unwarranted media intrusion into your and your family's life.

"It was a price that was once worth paying but for me that time has passed and I look forward to new challenges, greater freedoms and a life outside this madhouse."
