Sophie Burgess gave birth to tiny Evie and Oliver at New Cross Hospital but never got to meet her babies.

The 19-year-old, from Telford, was conscious when both babies were born but her condition soon worsened.

She suffered complications and died two days later with her partner Alex Carter, from Wolverhampton, at her side.

Dr Jonathan Odum, Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust medical director, said: "Sadly, Sophie developed a severe illness following the birth of her twins, from which she deteriorated very quickly.

"Despite the best efforts of the medical and nursing staff looking after her she passed away on the critical care unit a few hours later.

"The staff in the maternity department and critical care unit have been deeply affected by Sophie's death and the trust would like to pass on its sympathies and condolences to her family and friends.

"An investigation into the cause of her death is being carried out."

A fund set up to raise money for the twins has reached £5,000.
