Walsall Manor Hospital temporary staff bill cut by £200k

The cost of temporary workers at Walsall Manor Hospital was cut by £200,000 in a month, latest figures have shown.

A total of £1.56m was spent on bank, agency and locum staff in February compared to £1.766m in January.

Bosses at Walsall Healthcare Trust are recruiting new permanent staff in a bid to reduce the bill for temporary workers.

It has previously said the overall costs for the financial year ending this month could be close to £20m.

The hospital has been battling against rising admissions which has seen growing numbers of patients coming from Staffordshire.

Health chiefs have backed £3.5m proposals to bring in up to 85 nurses and 35 care support workers this year.

It could see nurses recruited from Ireland in an attempt to get new staff in quicker.

The trust currently has around 2,500 nurses.

A report to the trust next week, from head of finance and performance Ian Baines, says: "Other staffing agency spend reduced due to the departure of interim managers.

"Plans have been approved to reduce expenditure and recruit permanently to the nursing establishment."
