Residents say they have been left stunned after seeing the aftermath of the stricken car following the crash this morning.

The accident happened outside the home at the junction of Vicarage Street and Giles Road, in Langley Green, at around 8.30am.

A passer by smashed a window to get inside the BMW to help the driver, sustaining an injury to their hand which was treated at the scene.

Debris including piles of bricks and twisted iron railings were thrown across the home's driveway by the force of the impact.

Damage was caused to a car on the driveway, according to residents who rushed to the drivers aid.

Nine firefighters from Oldbury and Smethwick stations worked using cutting equipment to remove a door from the damaged BMW.

This allowed paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service to attend to the male driver aged in his 30s.

West Midlands Fire Service spokesman Neil Spencer said: "Fire crews worked to release the man who was trapped by his injuries.

"They used cutting equipment on the car."

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Claire Brown said: "A car had left the road and collided with the garden wall of a property.

"When ambulance staff arrived a passer-by was administering excellent first aid to the driver of the car.

"The driver, a man in his 30s, was unconscious but had sustained no apparent injuries.

"Ambulance staff administered treatment to the man, who regained consciousness at the scene, and removed him from the car before immobilising him with a neck collar and spinal board.

"The man was taken to Sandwell Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

"The helpful passer-by, who reportedly smashed a window to gain access to the car in order to help the man, sustained a hand injury. Ambulance staff cleaned and dressed his wound on scene and didn't require hospital treatment."

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was asleep at the time but I was woken up by blue lights and saw the ambulances and police there with the fire crews.

"It was heavy crash. There was quite a lot of damage. It was a shock."

Emergency services crews left the scene by around 9.30am.
