Motorists have been hitting double the 30mph speed limit along Myvod Road near two schools. Residents also claim to have seen other problems such drivers using mobile phones at the wheel.

They have now asked for better enforcement by police.

Neighbourhood officers and highways officials from Sandwell Council visited the road on Friday to discuss the issues with campaigners.

Ward councillor Elaine Costigan has asked for improved signage in the road to boost safety for residents and pedestrians.

The road takes motorists from the busy A461 Wood Green Road towards Woden Road North where parents take children to Old Park Primary School. Albert Pritchard Infants School is nearby in Crew Road.

Resident Diane Hayward said she had known of problems in the road having lived in the area since 2005.

"They have been going along here very fast," said the mother-of-two. "When I have been trying to come out of Woden Road North, I've had a couple of near misses.

"I've seen them doing 40mph, 60mph, down here so something needs to be done.

"It needs some new safety measures like some warning signs for example."

Councillor Costigan said she had been contacted by residents in the area who wanted action over the road problems.

She organised the meeting on Friday with police officers and Sandwell Council's highways team to come out and meet campaigners.

"There has been a problem down here with speeding motorists," she said.

"We are looking at different ways that we can help with maybe to improved signs.

"It shows good partnership with us working with the police and residents to try and get something done."

Councillor Costigan said police and the council would look to establish speed checks on the road to examine the issue.

It comes as residents have signed a petition calling for speed claiming measures, in Rydding Lane, Hateley Heath, following a spate of accidents.

More than 40 people living in the road have signed the petition which has the backing of ward councillors.

People are looking for 'speed cushions' which are smaller than speed bumps to be put in the road.

The petition will be discussing by Sandwell Council cabinet members at a meeting on Wednesday.
