Councillor Heap, who is ten months into his tenure as mayor, has been a member of the city council for 16 years.

The Liberal Democrat councillor, 80, who serves the Spring Vale residential area, told the Express & Star he felt it was the right time to call it a day.

"It's been a great pleasure serving the people of Wolverhampton," he said.

"But I am now 80-years-old and I think it is best to hand over the mantle to someone younger.

"I will still try and help as many people out as possible who feel they need my help but I don't think it's best for me to stay on as a councillor.

"Sometimes you have to question when is the best time to go and to finish my local political career as the Mayor of Wolverhampton is for me the perfect ending."
