The woman, in her 20s, fell from the flat at the Wood House tower block in Little London, Caldmore, Walsall, at 8.30am yesterday.

A 52-year-old man, believed to be known to the woman, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Shocked residents described how police and paramedics rushed to the scene, where they treated the woman for her injuries outside the flats before taking her to hospital. An air ambulance was also called.

More than a dozen officers attended. An area outside the flats was cordoned off until 3pm for a police investigation.

Neighbours said they believed the woman may have been pregnant. One resident living opposite the flat claimed to know the victim.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was taking my kids to school and the first thing I heard was the sirens of an ambulance behind me.

"Then I got back and they were all here. The air ambulance landed on the playground of the junior school in Caldmore.

"The paramedics seemed to be working on her for quite a while before taking her away.

"No-one has told me what has happened to her since.

"I know her, but only to speak to in passing. I am not sure what her name is but she is a nice woman. I think she is pregnant."

The woman added: "It's just awful something like this can happen in your own back yard. I can't believe it."

Tracy Hill was visiting her mother in the block of flats next to Wood House less than an hour after it happened.

She said: "It is just devastating. I used to live around here and there is always something going on in that block.

"I don't want my mum witnessing anything like that."

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to the scene at around 8.30am.

A helicopter crew from Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance also attended.

A spokesman said the woman suffered serious injuries and was taken by land ambulance to hospital.
