A multi-million pound investment to take on more than 80 new nurses at Walsall Manor Hospital has been backed by health bosses.

The £3.5m plans, which will see registered nurses recruited from Ireland, was agreed by the hospital's trust board yesterday.

It is hoped the staff, along with 35 clinical support workers, will be in place in autumn this year.

It is expected the investment will reduce the amount spent on temporary inpatient nurses by up to £1m.

Director of nursing at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, Kathryn Halford, told the board: "It will make a significant impact.

"We will of course continue to recruit within the UK. But I think the important thing is the registered nurses need to be with us as quickly as possible."
