An intrepid sailor is preparing for an epic adventure in honour of his son who suffers from cystic fibrosis.

Michael Goodwin will sail his yacht Blue Star on a two-year challenge around the UK to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Mr Goodwin's son Daniel has cystic fibrosis, so he knows only too well the challenges which sufferers face.

A recently retired Staffordshire University professor, Mr Goodwin, from Stone, will set off on his journey in May with his friend Roger Colmer.

And they hope to recruit as many people as possible to join them at various stages of the journey.

The first leg of the journey later this year will be travelling from Southampton to north Scotland.

The second, in 2016, will be from Orkney south through the Irish Sea and back to Southampton.

"I am really looking forward to a fantastic sailing adventure circumnavigating the UK coastline whilst raising funds to help conquer cystic fibrosis," Mr Goodwin said.

Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening genetic condition, which causes the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, to become clogged with thick sticky mucus.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust provides support to sufferers and their families and helps drive up standards in medical care.

Mr Goodwin, aged 59, said although his son, who is in his thirties, has a positive attitude, he battles continuously with his health.
