Tickets for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final next month went on general sale yesterday.

The club has sold its initial 20,000 allocation last week and was given an extra 5,000 tickets.

Following a further flurry of sales yesterday, club bosses say they are closing in on the 25,000 mark.

Club secretary Dan Mole said: "We have so far sold 24,000 tickets in total, which has surpassed the figure we were allocated for the Millennium Stadium play-offs in 2001.

"We have had so much support from the fans and the people of Walsall.

"The fact that we were given more than our original allocation of tickets this time round shows how well our supporters have been purchasing them since we opened the sales three weeks ago."

Shop staff at the stadium, in Bescot Crescent, have also been rushed off their feet selling merchandise.

A limited number of shirts are left. The club says it will not have a new order in time for the final on March 22.

Other items selling well are scarves, mugs and hoodies.
