The victim was attacked just before 6.15pm in Owen Street, Kates Hill, and suffered serious wounds to his head, shoulder, chest and back.

Detectives are currently trying to establish a motive for the attack.

The attacker is described as a white man, in his early 20s with a medium build, wearing dark clothing.

After the attack he walked off down Owen Street onto Dixons Green Road.

Acting Detective Inspector Greg Evans, from force CID, said: "We believe the offender may have received head or facial injuries himself during the attack and may be in some distress as a result.

"We are checking with local hospitals and would appeal for him to come forward and seek what may be urgent treatment.

"At that time of night we believe there may have been a number of people in the area possibly arriving home from work. We would appeal to anyone who has not yet spoken to us to come forward."

Officers have conducted house-to-house enquiries and part of the road remains sealed off while a thorough investigation is carried out.

Anyone with information should call force CID at Smethwick police station on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
