The youngster's injuries were described as serious and 'potentially life changing', and officers closed the road while an investigation was launched.

Inspector Matt Derrick from Staffordshire Police said "We understand that the traffic at the time of the collision was slow moving, and it is a busy time of day on the Newport Road so we urge any witnesses to call Staffordshire Police on 101.

"We need to make a full examination of the scene before we reopen the road and I want to thank the local public for their cooperation whilst we undertake this important work."

Anyone with information is urged to call Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident 416 of 24 Feb 2015.
