Daniel Carter grabbed a knife and hurled abuse at the couple during an hour long confrontation at the family home in Aldridge, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Trouble flared after the parents returned to the property in Broad Meadow on September 23, it was said.

Mr Howard Searle, prosecuting, explained: "When he was not given money he wanted the defendant became aggressive and started threatening his step father.

"They had an hour long conversation before he walked upstairs and returned with a black handled knife.

"He was demanding £30 and threatened to kill his mother and stepfather if he did not get it. He was waving the knife about and warned: 'I am going to stick you.'"

Carter, who had a long standing problem with cannabis, was arrested the following day, the court heard.

Mr Mohammad Hafeez, defending, said: "He is having some contact with his parents over the phone and wants to try to reform his relationship with them. He intends to rebuild bridges between them."

Carter, now of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to affray and was made the subject of a restraining order banning him from visiting the street in which his mother and stepfather live unless invited by them. He was also given a ten month prison sentence suspended under supervision for two years.

Judge John Warner told him: "Isn't it sad that your parents do not want you back but I do not blame them for that. No one should put up with the sort of behaviour you displayed, least of all your parents."
