A care home in Wolverhampton has closed due to poor standards of care.

The residential unit was based at Blakenhall Resource Centre in Haggar Street.

It was given a critical report by health watchdog, the Care Quality Commission last year and banned from accepting new residents in April.

But it has now been shut after failing to improve standards. Out of a possible 29 residents, it has just four left.

Wolverhampton City Council was running the home and the issues related to mismanagement, bad record keeping and managing of medicines.

Adult services chief Councillor Steve Evans said: "I am very disappointed that the standard of care being provided in the residential unit at Blakenhall Resource Centre was not of the level that we expect.

"Closing a care facility is not a decision the council takes lightly and, as demonstrated here, we will not hesitate to take action to improve standards where required."

It was stressed that there were no concerns with day care services within Blakenhall Resource Centre, which will continue as normal.
