Ablewell service station slashed the cost of a litre of unleaded down to just 96.4p.

Bosses said trade was up by 40 per cent on Friday as a result.

The garage, which is supplied by Harvest Energy, started a petrol price war last weekend when it became one of the first in the West Midlands to sell a litre of unleaded below £1 for the first time in eight years.

Friday's reduction featured on Free Radio and the cost of a litre of unleaded went back up to 99.7p at 6pm that day.

Ablewell's owner Velautham Sarveswaran said: "We had cars queuing onto the main road and trade was up by 40 per cent."

Mr Sarveswaran and his wife Ananthi re-opened the town centre garage last August after it had been closed for about two years.
