Cyclist seriously injured and road closed after Wolverhampton collision

A cyclist suffered multiple injuries after being hit by a car in Wolverhampton today.

The man, who is believed to be 26, was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

He suffered several fractures, including to his arms and legs.

The crash happened at 7am at the junction of Birmingham New Road and Thompson Avenue.

It caused major traffic problems during this morning's rush hour, with part of Birmingham New Road closed off for more than three hours.

John Hawker, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a cyclist and a car that had been in a serious collision.

"The cyclist suffered serious leg and arm injuries. He received emergency treatment at the scene and his condition was stabilised.

"The man was then transferred by land ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further emergency treatment.

"The hospital had been pre alerted to the man's arrival and serious injuries."

Traffic was diverted down Dudley Road while the Highways Agency cleared debris.
