Smoke alarms were triggered at the semi-detached house, Hawthorn Road, Shelfield.

Watch Commander Phil Cutler, of Aldridge Fire Station, said: "The flames were confined to the bed in the bedroom, but the rest of the first floor was smoke-logged as a result.

"Fortunately the detectors were activated and the three people who were at the property went outside to wait for our crews to arrive. We were able to put out the fire before it took hold any further."

He said it was caused by a matches or a lighter. A total of 10 firefighters from Aldridge and Bloxwich attended the scene at 3pm
