Walsall Manor Hospital has short of hitting a national target for treating patients at its accident and emergency ward for a second week running.

Figures from NHS England show that out of 1,363 patients coming to A&E for the week ending January 11, just 70 per cent were seen within four hours.

The national target is 95 per cent.

For the week before, ending January 4, 67 per cent of the 1,395 patients who entered the A&E doors were seen in the four hour target.

Last week, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust revealed that there has been a 27 per cent increase in emergency admissions during 2014/15 compared to those in 2012/13.

Councillor Marco Longhi, chairman of Walsall Council's health and social care scrutiny committee, said the hospital needed help from the Government.

He said: "This is a time of unprecedented demand on the hospital, not just from the local population, but 20 to 30 per cent of people going to A&E are coming as a result of the problems experienced in Staffordshire.

"We need any financial penalties against the hospital to be suspended to help it support its patients."
