The developers plan to build assisted living accommodation on a large plot of land within the grounds of Tettenhall College. School leaders say the sale of the land in Wood Road, Tettenhall, will provide the cash necessary for them to invest in new buildings and facilities.

So far no planning application has been submitted for the site, which the firm says would create up to 17 jobs.

The new apartments will be based on land currently occupied by a car park and aimed at elderly residents who require a high level of on-site care.

Darren Humphreys, regional director, McCarthy & Stone, said: "Our Assisted Living developments offer secure accommodation to frail elderly people, allowing them to retain independence safe in the knowledge that support is on-hand when needed.

"We're keen to develop an Assisted Living (Extra Care) scheme which positively contributes to the local community both through attractive design and the increase in local housing choice the development would bring to the area and are committed to engaging with the local community before submitting a planning application."

Tettenhall College was founded in 1863 and sits in the largest wooded area in the city. School spokesman Chris Way, said: "The land is surplus to Tettenhall College's requirements and the intention is for the funds generated to be invested in the infrastructure of the college."
