Power cables collapse closes the A5 in Staffordshire
Power cables have fallen onto the A5 at Gailey forcing the road to be closed between the junction of the M6 and the A449 tonight.
A pole that the cables were connected to collapsed and engineers were at the scene trying to fix the problem.
The A5 was closed in both directions while the work was carried out.
A Highways Agency spokesman said the incident was reported just after 7pm. It was hoped that the road could be reopened by 10pm.
The Highways Agency said it did not know what caused the pole to collapse but it is not thought to be weather related at this stage.
Diversions were in place, with westbound traffic using the M6 northbound to Junction 13 then taking the A449 southbound to re-join the A5 at Gailey.
The eastbound diversion was the reverse of the above.
Motorists were advised to allow extra time for journeys.
