The man, in his 70s, died following the smash involving a silver Citroen and green Peugeot, which happened just off Vine Island in Oxley, Wolverhampton yesterday afternoon.

Police initially said the man who died was driving a silver Citroen, but today they clarified he was in fact the driver of the Peugeot.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics but died later in hospital.

The driver of the Citroen was treated for head and leg injuries and was taken to hospital.

West Midlands Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and help piece together the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Collision Investigation Unit, said: "I understand that the circumstances surrounding the collision are very confusing and we are still in the process of piecing together what happened today.

"I believe a number of witnesses have spoken to officers at the scene, but I need anyone who was in the area and saw the Peugeot before the collision or when the crash happened to call me or one of the team.

"Officers are working with the family of the deceased and our thoughts are with them at this sad time."

Anyone with information is urged to call West Midlands Police on 101. Alternatively people can leave information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers the independent charity on 0800 555 111.
