The officers suffered leg fractures after being thrown into the air when a VW Golf GTi ploughed into the back of a stationary Mercedes E350 they had stopped on a routine check at 1.30pm on Sunday morning on the A461 outside Dudley Port railway station near Tipton.

The 46-year-old has since been released from hospital but his 44-year-old colleague remains in hospital and continues to be treated for leg injuries.

The crash shunted the Mercedes into the police and sent the Golf careering forward, also hitting the officers and throwing them into the air.

Both officers suffered broken legs, one was knocked unconscious. The driver of the Golf was trapped in the wreckage of her car.

The 37-year-old Golf driver, from Dudley Port, was taken to hospital with a suspected broken shoulder and was spoken to by officers who continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
