Thousands hit Midlands high streets for Boxing Day sales

Shoppers were today hitting the high street to nab bargain deals as the Boxing Day sales got underway.

Major Next stores were opening from 6am while Beatties in Wolverhampton was welcoming in customers from 7am.

The retailers have slashed their prices by up to 70 per cent in what has been a bumper Christmas week.

Wolverhampton was today bracing itself for around 80,000 shoppers, while in excess of 100,000 were expected at the Merry Hill Shopping Centre in Brierley Hill.

In Stafford, the Guildhall was expecting its best year with a 10 per cent increase in footfall, and in Walsall The Saddlers Shopping Centre is opening two hours longer than last year to support shops in the town.

Currys PC World has up to £200 off on its gadgets – including the 8GB Apple Macbook Air 13.3", which is on sale for £849, down from £1,049. Argos is offering 60 per cent off on 1,000 toys.

Beatties, which is owned by House of Fraser, has 50 per cent off men's suits, £500 off a Linea Riva three-seater sofa, and even 70 per cent off certain brands.

At Marks & Spencer a cashmere onesie is being sold at £99 - down from £199, and men's luxury jackets are reduced from £249 to £150.

And a £200 ten-piece stainless steel pan set on sale for just £60, or 70 per cent less, at Debenhams.

Many stores - including online giant Amazon - started their Boxing Day sales two days early with new deals going live on Christmas Eve.

The average person will today spend £46.10 in the Boxing Day sales.

Gavin Prior, general manager at Merry Hill, said: "The success of Boxing Day sales grows year on year without a shadow of a doubt."

Nicholas Pitt, director at Wolverhampton's Mander Centre, said: "With the weekend coming off the back of Christmas and Boxing Day that will certainly boost sales compared to other years. It is always a busy day here and the indication is that it will be the best for several years."
